Suriname to host Caribbean Conference on Higher Education

SURINAME - The Caribbean Conference on Higher Education will take place in Paramaribo, Suriname, from April, 11-13 2010, bringing together policy makers, educators, and experts, who will examine the current situation of tertiary education in the Caribbean.

The formal opening will be on the evening of April 11 for the regional conference, a joint initiative of the Organization of American States’ (OAS) Department of Human Development, Education, and Culture (DHDEC), the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC), and the UNESCO Kingston Cluster Office for the Caribbean, in collaboration with the Government of Suriname.

During the Caribbean Conference on Higher Education, participants will also explore opportunities for regional academic cooperation on critical higher education issues, with particular emphasis on small and developing states.
Following the outcomes and recommendations issued in the Final Communiqué of the World Conference on Higher Education (WCHE 2009), which took place in Paris last July, thematic issues on the agenda of the Suriname Conference will include: quality assurance and accreditation; policy challenges; and the role of higher education in Caribbean development, including the link with the labour market and the transitioning of Caribbean colleges to universities.

At the same time, the Conference will ask attendees to join in addressing regional initiatives for concerted and effective cooperation aimed at assisting Haiti in rebuilding its higher education system.

In addition to the conference organizers, this conference is made possible through the generous support of Hotel Krasnapolsky Suriname, where the event will be held, Caribbean Airlines and Copa Airlines.

This event is by invitation only. People interested in receiving documents of this event may contact comunicaciones@unesco.org.ve . For more information visit
