OAS Secretary General Welcomes U.S. Government Measures on Migration

WASHINGTON, DC - The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, José Miguel Insulza, welcomed the measures announced today by the administration of United States President Barack Obama, which will ease the migratory situation of young people who entered the country before the age of 16, saying “we should applaud this initiative that favors millions of Latinos in irregular situations.”

Insulza expressed his satisfaction at the deferred action process announced by the Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, which will alleviate the migratory situation of a high number of young people in irregular situations, slowing their deportation processes and opening the possibility of seeking employment for those who meet the requirements laid out in the memorandum circulated today by the Department of Homeland Security. The Secretary General highlighted the courage of the U.S. government initiative, which “will benefit many families, allowing them to avoid the consequences of forced separation of their members and the separation from the culture of the United States, which they’ve adopted as their own.”

The chief representative of the OAS expressed his hope that the U.S. Congress will soon resume debate on the DREAM Act, which deals with migration from a comprehensive perspective. He said the futures of several million young immigrants depend on the measure’s passage.
