OAS Secretary General Welcomes Confirmation of Haitian Prime Minister by Parliament

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti - The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, congratulated the Haitian Parliament for “having demonstrated its will to advance toward the future and its capacity for compromise” with the confirmation of the Prime Minister Designate, Laurent Lamothe, first in the Senate on April 10, then in the Chamber of Deputies on May 3, 2012. “This confirmation represents a step forward for the political process and the stability of Haiti,” said the chief representative of the hemispheric organization.

The OAS recognizes the efforts made by the President of the Republic, Michel Joseph Martelly; the President of the Senate Simon Dieuseul Desras; and the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Levaillant Louis-Jeune, who helped forge the consensus for the investiture of the Prime Minister and his new government.

The Secretary General called for a swift conclusion to this process, so that the executive power can once again be fully functioning and continue working toward the reconstruction and development of the country.

The OAS Assistant Secretary General, Ambassador Albert Ramdin, will travel this week to the Haitian capital to meet with political authorities and offer the continued support of the OAS to the Haitian institutions and for the priorities of the country, in particular the strengthening of the rule of law, the organization of the next legislative and municipal elections and the economic and social development of Haiti.
