Op-Ed: Congressman Joe Garcia Reaches Out To Caribbean-Americans

SOUTH FLORIDA – The South Florida community is unlike any other in the world. It’s home to cultures so diverse that a trip from one end of Congressional District 26 to the other makes one feel like they are travelling through a small nation, not a district. That is precisely why I am so proud to be the voice for our district in Congress. I have the privilege of representing constituents from every corner of the Caribbean. And I consider it a privilege because this community embodies the values of hard work and determination that have embodied our shared American Dream.  I also call it a privilege because I believe that now more than I ever I am in a position to work to significantly improve  lives of South Florida residents.

During my first two years in congress I introduced the only bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform (CIR) bill in the House of Representatives. If this bill is passed, it will also mean more access to important  services for Caribbean small business owners, and it will mean access to instate tuition for the Caribbean students who are not yet citizens but whose families have come to America hoping to have a prosperous future.

I continue to support measures like the Haitian Family Reunification Parole Program that will expedite the migration process for the 100,000 Family Based Visas petitions that are currently in the pipeline. South Florida has been immensely generous to my family of immigrants, and I will fight for the opportunity for others to prosper as well. That includes pushing for a federal minimum wage of $10.10 per hour so that residents of Florida City won’t have to drive into Monroe County for work simply because they can’t provide for their families in Miami-Dade.

I am running for reelection on November 4th for the opportunity to once again serve the Caribbean community and all of District 26 with passion and dignity.  Early voting is happening now and election day is November 4th.  I encourage you to vote and am asking for your support.
