Major activities in Atlanta to mark Jamaica’s independence

ATLANTA – Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica in Atlanta, Georgia will mark Jamaica’s 52nd year of independence with three major activities August 3 – 16.

AJALogoThe program of activities planned by the Atlanta Jamaica Association (AJA) will commence with an Ecumenical Thanksgiving service at St Timothy’s Church, Mt. Salem on Sunday, August 3, 2014 at 5PM. The sermon will be delivered by Rev. Holness Sparkle while the Rev. Dr. Barry Davis will present a special musical tribute. The service will also feature music, song and poetry which capture Jamaica’s cultural heritage.

On Independence Day, Wednesday, August 6, a cultural concert will take place at St. Timothy’s church which will feature artists, Lady Genius, Anthony Malvo, Orion, Fyah among others.

The curtains will come down on the celebrations on Saturday, August 16 when the AJA will stage its annual Independence Ball, Scholarship Awards and Black tie Gala at the Marriott Gateway Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.

The guest speaker will be Mr. Richard Byles, President and CEO of Cigna Group and co-chair of the Economic Program Oversight Committee (EPOC).

According to President of the AJA, Mr. Allan Stewart, the association will extend its scholarship program this year to include students in Jamaica. He said four scholarships would be given to children of Jamaican heritage living in Atlanta while three will be given to students in Jamaica enrolled in a tertiary institution.

He pointed out that the association was keen in supporting education and funds raised from the ball will go towards its education fund.
