High Achieving Haitian-American, Luke Jr. Matthew Nelson Heading To Columbia University

BROWARD COUNTY – Mr. Lucner Nelson and Mrs. Chantale Nelson are proud of their son, Luke Jr. Matthew Nelson, who will be graduating from College Academy at Broward College on June 25th, 2015. After four years of hard work and dedication, he has completed his Associate’s Degree with highest distinguished honors from the Broward College Honors Institute and his High School Diploma. He will be graduating with a 5.19 GPA.

Luke has been accepted into great schools such as Vanderbilt, Northwestern, University of Miami, Duke University, Rice University, Emory University, Fordham University, Tufts, Brandeis, University of Florida, Stetson University, Florida International University, Florida State University, University of Tampa, University of Central Florida and Columbia University.

Luke has chosen to attend Columbia University to study Biology in the City of New York with hopes of becoming an ophthalmologist, a passion of his that stemmed from the moment he received his first pair of glasses.

Luke Nelson has been awarded scholarships from the Burger King McLamore Foundation, the National Supermarket Association, the Cumberland Farms Believe and Achieve, and the Congressional Black Caucus General Mills Scholarship. Luke participated in Florida governor’s debate that took place on Broward College’s campus. His debate team planned a mock debate that was streamed live to get students knowledgeable about the topics in the upcoming mid-season election.

Above all of this, Luke has been making an impact in his community through his extra curricular activities. Due to his passion for ophthalmology, he has worked with Lion’s Club , a club dedicated to enriching the community through eyesight, to collect used glasses from his community for reuse for this in need. He has coordinated many activities, such as an information stand about depth perception at the Museum of Science and Discovery.

Luke has been the recipient of many awards such as Outstanding Student in Intro to Informational Tech, Outstanding Student in AP Human Geography, Broward County Forensic League – Lincoln Douglas After School Debate 1st Place, Broward County After School Debate Tournament – Lincoln Douglas – 3rd Place, South Florida Catholic Forensic League – Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate- 5th Place, Broward College President’s list Summer Term 2014 (BC GPA=4.0) , Broward College Central Campus Academic Dean’s Honors Award, Broward College President’s List Winter Term (BC GPA=4.0), and Broward College Dean’s List Fall Term 2013  (BC GPA=3.8)
