Commentary With Winston Barnes: Respect History

SOUTH FLORIDAAs the November elections approach, convention or no convention, it is probably more vital now to contemplate Black history in these United States.

First though, ask yourself, “Are you one of those persons who can easily call off many reasons why you are not going to vote?”   Some claiming, “devoid of an understanding of said history”, or, that “they are confused about who to vote for”.

Understand if it is for the first time in your entire existence that people, living breathing human beings, Black, White, Native American and others, actually died, as in losing their lives because they sought the right to vote, and some for exercising the right to cast ballots.

Take the time and ask of yourself if by saying, “you are not going to vote”, if you are not disrespecting the lives of those who voted years ago, voted so you can enter any store you want to today, so you can sit anywhere on any bus, so you can travel to Miami Beach at night without having to carry a special pass.

Ask yourself, if voting is not is not one of the few legitimate tools we have to make even a little change, and sometimes even save you and your children from people who not only do not respect you and your family, but from persons who do not have even the semblance of shame.
