Broward 100 Begins at The Block Party

The County’s yearlong centennial joins higher-education institutions for a bash on Thursday, October 16, 2014

BROWARD COUNTY  – Celebrating the Art of Community is delighted to announce that its yearlong centennial celebration is about to get underway. On Thursday, October 16, 2014, Broward 100 will begin during the annual event, The Block Party. Organized by Broward College, Florida Atlantic University and Nova Southeastern University, this bash, to celebrate higher education, will occur from 5 to 8 p.m. along Las Olas Boulevard, between Andrews and Second avenues in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

In collaboration with the area’s higher-education institutions and the NSU Museum of Art l Fort Lauderdale, Broward 100 @ The Block Party will feature art exhibitions, live music and performances, live graffiti painting, family activities, and, of course, food trucks at several event areas.

Guests can view live graffiti painting and listen to music at NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale’s outdoor plaza. John Wai Kung Fu Academy Lion Dance Performance Team will perform and guide attendees to and from the various activity areas.

A children’s area will be available featuring fun, historical and educational activities. Live music and performances will be held on the stage at the Entertainment Plaza.

Crowning the event is special guest and Broward native Catherine Hickland, best known for ABC’s One Life to Live & Broadway’s Les Miserables fame, who will serve as the Master of Ceremonies. Each participating education institution will provide information booths along Las Olas Boulevard.

And Broward College, in collaboration with FAU, will reveal its Inside Out Broward installation of which features a large-scale black-and-white collage of student headshots. This fun and expressive collage is part of the global Inside Out Project street art movement invented by JR, the French artist of the 2011 TED Talk International fame.

Broward 100 @ The Block Party brings together the County’s brightest resources, education and culture, and the team behind Broward 100 – Celebrating the Art of Community is pleased to join this massive celebration brought to you by the area’s educational institutions. The public is invited to attend for free. It all begins on Thursday, October 16, 2014, from 5 to 8 PM.

Arrive, explore the children’s plaza, the information/education booths and food trucks, music will be playing and a graffiti artist will be creating art on the Museum of Art plaza

6:10 – 6:30 p.m.
Speakers on Entertainment Plaza

6:30 p.m.
John Wai Kung Fu Academy Lion Dance Performance Team will lead the public over to the areas where other activity is taking place — Education Plaza, Entertainment Plaza, Museum of Art plaza and the Museum of Art Academy

6:30 – 8 p.m.
Children’s Plaza entertainment continues

6:30 – 8 p.m.
Busker performing artists along Las Olas between 1st and 2nd Avenues

6:30 – 8 p.m.
Performers will be on the stage at the Entertainment plaza
